Lawrence Halprin

Wikipedia

Halprin’s work is marked by his attention to human scale, user experience, and the social impact of his designs, in the egalitarian tradition of Frederick Law Olmsted. Halprin was the creative force behind the interactive, ‘playable’ civic fountains most common in the 1970s, an amenity which continues to greatly contribute to the pedestrian social experience in Portland Oregon, where “Ira’s Fountain” is loved and well-used, and which has been a chronic failure at the transient-ridden United Nations Plaza in San Francisco.

 

In his best work, he construed landscape architecture as narrative.

Biography

Ritsuko Taho is an artist who works in the public arena ranging from
landscape sculpture and earthwork to urban sculptural installations.

Taho is interested in relationships to the Other –for instance,
between nature and people, people and people. She has dealt with
these issues in public art and explored the use of various natural
materials while she has incorporated community participation within
her installations since the early 1980s.

Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban

Tribute in Light, being projected on Sept. 11, 2009, from the ProPublica office on One Exchange Plaza


Tribute in Light was first presented on March 11, 2002, six months after the attacks, and MAS has presented it annually since. Comprising eighty-eight 7,000-watt xenon light bulbs positioned into two 48-foot squares that echo the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers, Tribute in Light is assembled each year on a roof near the World Trade Center site. The illuminated memorial reaches 4 miles into the sky and is the strongest shaft of light ever projected from earth into the night sky. See this list of great Viewing Locations.

It was independently conceived by several artists and designers who were brought together under the auspices of MAS and Creative Time. Tribute was designed by John Bennett, Gustavo Bonevardi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian Laverdiere and Paul Myoda with lighting consultant Paul Marantz. It was originally made possible by a grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and with the generous assistance of Con Edison.

うごく七夕まつり、陸前高田、岩手

初盆を迎えた岩手県陸前高田市で「うごく七夕まつり」が行われ、
華やかな飾りを付けた山車が、がれきの中をゆっくりと進んだ。
山車の多くが津波の被害を受け、一時は中止も考えられたが、開催された。
「死者の霊を慰めるのが祭りの始まり。こんな時こそ祭りをしよう」

愛知県豊田市足助町の古い街並みに、700個以上の灯籠(とうろう)が点灯される催しが行われている。今年で10年目。

 灯籠は「たんころりん」と呼ばれ、高さ70~80センチ、直径25センチの竹枠を和紙で包み込み作られている。名前の由来は、ヒョウタンに似ている陶製の「ひょうそく」の形から「ひょうたんころりん」と変化して名づけられた。

 今年は地元・足助中学校の生徒が和紙に「今を生きる」「再興できる」などと東日本大震災の被災地へのメッセージを書き込んだたんころりん300個も並ぶ。15日まで毎日、日没から午後9時まで点灯する。
